The first baby-step in the long-anticipated redevelopment of the Winfield Fuel & Material Co. property in downtown Winfield will be taken Thursday evening when would-be developer Robert A. Carrane of Exmoor Properties in Northfield makes a presentation to the Village Board of a concept he has, if he buys the property.

The Winfield Plan Commission will hold a public hearing tonight on a plan to put a 45-home subdivision on the 29-acre cornfield on the east side of County Farm Rd., north of Parkway Dr., adjacent to the Faith Baptist Church.


Plans to eliminate the Winfield Police Department and use some of the savings to aid Trustee Tim Allen’s goal of commercializing Roosevelt Rd. have been discussed behind closed doors for several months by the Village Board, The Winfield Register has learned.

Seventh in our series highlighting the involvement of DuPage County residents in the Civil War 150 years ago.

There were 222 DuPage men who joined the 8th Illinois Cavalry. This regiment was organized at St. Charles and was mustered in for three years on Sept. 18, 1861. Like most units there were frustrating delays waiting for uniforms and weapons. Finally on Oct. 12, 1861 the unit left St. Charles and after a long train ride arrived at D.C. on Oct. 18, 1861.
