Honest Cops Evaluation

The Winfield Village Board is about to sign a contract for a study of the Winfield Police Department operations. Having an efficiency study done from time-to-time is usually a good idea for each department in any government, but this one is not cast as an efficiency study as much as it is an evaluation of various outsourcing methods.

Name Recognition

Someone —the most likely suspect is a well-known scofflaw now on the Village Board— put up an unauthorized brown street sign honorarily naming a certain major street in town after a friend of his. Instead of summarily removing it, Village officials asked the Board what to do. One bully loudly insisted the sign remain up, and other Trustees, cowed, tried to avoid the bully’s wrath by asking the Village Staff to do some research and come up with a recommended policy.

No Cops? No Go! Residents Say So.

By Stan Zegel

The April 19 Village Board meeting started with a moment of silence for two recently-deceased officials: former Village Trustee Dennis Keeler, and West Chicago Mayor Mike Kwasman. What followed next bore no resemblance to silence.

8th Illinois Cavalry Sent to D.C. to Defend the Nation’s Capital; Another Union Defeat

Seventh in our series highlighting the involvement of DuPage County residents in the Civil War 150 years ago.

There were 222 DuPage men who joined the 8th Illinois Cavalry. This regiment was organized at St. Charles and was mustered in for three years on Sept. 18, 1861. Like most units there were frustrating delays waiting for uniforms and weapons. Finally on Oct. 12, 1861 the unit left St. Charles and after a long train ride arrived at D.C. on Oct. 18, 1861.

What’s the Rush?

In a hurry to plant your tomatoes and peppers?, well wait. Traditionally the old timers would wait until Memorial Day, and for good reason— the chance of frost. You won't be much ahead by rushing either, because those veggies will stall until the weather is warm.

Staff Size Reductions Signalled at SD 200

In what has become an annual spring event in many school districts, the Wheaton-Warrenville District 200 Board of Education voted at its April 11 meeting to issue blanket layoff notices to 35 of its non-tenured teachers, based on seniority. However, this does not necessarily mean that these positions have been eliminated, and many of the same teachers may be back next fall.
